Moonee Valley City Council announced a $3.5 million boost to redevelop the East Keilor Leisure Centre and provide improved facilities for the local community.

The redevelopment is part of the Council Plan 2009-13 and developed through wide consultation with the community.

The Mayor of Moonee Valley, Cr Paul Giuliano, said the improved facilities will include an environmentally sustainable design throughout the centre and will assist Council in reducing its water and energy use.

“The redevelopment is a welcome boost to the area and will ensure everyone in the community can access high quality sustainable services to improve their health and wellbeing.”

He said as the population of metropolitan Melbourne continues to grow, more people will use local services like leisure centres and Council’s challenge is to ensure it can meet demand and improve community facilities for all of Moonee Valley.

“Leisure participation has changed dramatically over the last 20 years, with more people now using leisure centres to exercise than traditional organised sports clubs,” Cr Guiliano said.

“In addition, membership of the East Keilor Leisure Centre is growing. The centre currently has more than 1,980 members with over 235,000 visits in 2008-09. Council wants to meet this demand and future growth by providing redeveloped and improved facilities.

He said the improved centre will also include an increased need for programs for the older adult community as well as young families in the North Western region of Moonee Valley.

“ABS statistics show that the most popular physical activities amongst Australian adults are walking, aerobics/fitness classes and swimming,” Cr Giuliano said.

“With future trends predicting the continued growth in the use of leisure centres, the redeveloped East Keilor Leisure Centre will be able to provide a more flexible service to meet the changing health and wellbeing needs of all sections of the local community.”

East Keilor Leisure Centre was constructed in the 1960s as an outdoor pool, with the leisure facility and indoor pools added in 1987. To ensure the longevity of this popular community facility, it requires major maintenance.
