Have your say on the future of housing in Moonee Valley  Printer Friendly

Residents of Moonee Valley will be encouraged to have their say on the future of housing in the local area as part of Council’s Housing Strategy to cater for Victoria’s growing population.

The strategy is in line with State Governments plans for population growth that could see more than half of Victoria’s growing population directed into already established urban suburbs, like Moonee Valley.

The Mayor of Moonee Valley, Cr Paul Giuliano, said it was expected that Metropolitan Melbourne would need to accommodate an additional 600,000 dwellings over the next 20 years.

“Moonee Valley’s proximity to the city, strong transport links and aesthetic appeal is likely to mean we will be under increased pressure for more medium and high density housing in the future,” he said.

The population in Moonee Valley is also steadily growing and is expected to increase to 116,000 by 2028.

“Over the next 20 years, the most significant increase in population will be between the ages of 60 and 84 years. This, combined with an increase in lone person households and a decline in household size, will mean changes in the type of housing are required to meet the needs of the community,” CR Guiliano said.

“In response to these issues, Council has developed a draft Housing Strategy to ensure future development in the local area is guided and appropriately located.

“The draft strategy also aims to ensure Moonee Valley has enough of the right type of housing to meet future needs.”

The draft Housing Strategy is to be used in combination with the structure plans underway and those already completed to assist in making decision on future planning applications and development opportunities in Moonee Valley.
